Published Writing

Here are some recent articles I have had published, both here in Spain and in the U.K. I hope you enjoy them. If they bring up anything for you, please let me know using the "Contact Me" facility which you can access via the website main menu.

Costa Blanca Effect

This is a series of articles I produced for The Weekly Post, an English-language newspaper here on The Costa Blanca. In it I look at why the dream of a new life in the sun can become more of a nightmare for some people. The articles suggest a way of creating a personal plan that both aids understanding what is happening to you, and of managing your way forward. The ideas are applicable to any ex-pat, particularly where the mother tongue isn't the language of your new homeland.

Taking The Waters

Establishing your new life in Spain can be enormously exciting and stimulating. However at times, engaging with the system can be a rather frustrating and very bizarre experience. How you react to it depends on whether you are in Terminator or Monty Python mode. Here is my story of trying to get the water service for our apartment put into my name.

Better Mental Health

Physiological and psychological suggestions for securing and improving individual mental health, and by implication, improving the quality of relationships whether at home, school or work.

The Demon Drink

Lithium is a natural mineral (a metal in fact) which has a variety of uses. It is present in the batteries that power cameras and mobile phones and is often administered, under close and regular medical supervision, principally to people suffering from the profound mood disturbance of bi-polar disorder. Its effectiveness was discovered when Lithium was administered experimentally to a group of psychiatric patients in 1949. Interestingly, its impact when present in water was known (but not understood) in the second century A.D.

What's In The Water?

Anybody Listening?

You may have seen recent articles in the press quoting research which seems to imply that some women are more likely to spend "excessively" in the 10 days before a period starts. The inference was that the boost from so-called retail therapy allows women to deal with the unpleasant, negative feelings created by hormonal change at this point in their cycle. Before going on I would, as a therapist, take issue with the concept of retail therapy as any boost achieved is only temporary, often leaving guilt or remorse later, when the reality of the overspending becomes obvious when the bank or credit card statement arrives. Rather than therapy, it is more like a habit or an addiction that seems to soothe and does not actually relieve the underlying problem, and which over time can become a problem in its own right.
